Innovative climate neutrality solution for industry

CS4I (Climate Solution for Industries)

The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as part of the funding program KMU-innovativ energy efficiency and climate protection under the funding number 01LY2008

The federal government is increasing the climate targets: Germany is to become climate neutral by 2045.
In addition, Germany must reduce its emissions by 65% by 2030 (compared to 1990). 15% of the emissions come from the industrial sector.

The effects of climate protection measures and climate-friendly action can currently only be evaluated historically. In this context, Efficiency First applies: the cleanest kilowatt hour is the one that is not generated in the first place. A pure snapshot based on a historial assessment is therefore not sufficient to achieve the climate targets.

Efficiency First:

The cleanest kilowatt hour is the one that is not generated in the first place!

With CS4I we make climate protection predictable and simulatable - continuously and in real time.

The physical situation in the processes production, transport, energy supply etc. is combined in a model on the basis of real data. The relevant causers and influencing factors for the CO2 footprint are taken into account.

The system and analysis boundaries go beyond the “direct impact“ of the company and take into account upstream and downstream influences and effects – including those of suppliers and customers (scope 1-3).

The new approach offers the possibility to build any scenarios based on normalized historical, measured current as well as simulated future data. Besides the business activities (from the overall view to the level of production lines and products), energy and resource efficiency and the effects of climate-friendly options for action and compensation measures are included in the simulations and models.

At the end of the project the prototype of the future platform solution is available. The digital IT platform offers companies a holistic view of their business activities in terms of Climate impact.

The economic effects of actions are shown, simulated and forecasted.

This way, decision-making models that support companies new approaches to decarbonisation and impact assessment are created.

CS4I stands for innovation in the field of climate protection and efficiency. Therefore it is subsidised by the BMBF-Förderprogramm KMU-innovativ in the field of energy efficiency/climate protection under the funding code 01LY2008.

Our research project partners

Contributing to the energy transition together.

The companies and the CS4I project consortium are providing their extensive experience and existing solutions, which are being brought together and further developed within the project.

INTENSE AG

Founded in 1999, the company is focused on IT consulting and solution development, mainly in the energy and industrial sectors.

Core competencies are resource efficiency and sustainability.

As consortium leader, INTENSE AG is responsible for the overall coordination and project management as well as the technical conception for the research project.

objective partner

Founded in 1995, the company specializes in IT consulting and solution development/programming. The focus is on innovative solutions in the field of Industry 4.0. Objective partner provides support mainly for technical conception as well as IT implementation.

Fraunhofer IPA

The Fraunhofer IPA - one of the largest institutes of the Fraunhofer society - was founded in 1959. Organizational and technological tasks in regard to production form the research and development focus. Within the project, the institute contributes its knowledge in the areas of energy and resource efficiency.

Digital Renewables

The Hamburg-based company Digital Renewables GmbH was founded in 2019 by Volker Feddersen and Lukas Liebler and is the digital marketplace for climate solutions such as renewable energy, energy efficiency, climate neutralization, etc.

With more than 20 years of expertise in the renewable energy industry as well as in international marketplaces, the Hamburg-based company is well positioned to bundle supply and demand in an efficient and timely manner. For the first time, the digital platform approach offers standards, cost transparency and efficiency, as well as comparability of projects in different areas of climate solutions.

Our industry and technology partners

Gerolsteiner Brunnen GmbH & Co. KG

is already working intensively on the topics of sustainability and climate neutrality. As a result, requirements that are close to the market can already be included, discussed and evaluated in the design phase.

SAP SE

has a large amount of know-how. Especially in the area of the technological platform on which the prototype is significantly developed. The development time of new technologies and services can thus be accelerated.

Döhler GmbH

is a global producer, marketer and provider of technology-driven natural ingredients, ingredient systems and integrated solutions for the food and beverage industry. Doehler’s integrated approach and the broad product portfolio are the optimal basis for innovative and safe food & beverage applications.

Project information

The duration of the research project is 2 years. Flanked by firmly planned work packages, the development and implementation of the prototype solution is being carried out in an agile process. Milestones during the implementation phase ensure that previously defined use cases can be handled.
